New releases (of interest) – March 15th

The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar:  One of the more blogger/hipster critically-awaited release of the year, this is not an act you would associate with such types…because they rock pretty hard.  A female-fronted, loud, cymbal-crashing rock band which evokes images of Heart for me (and who doesn’t like Heart?).

The Joy Formidable – “A Heavy Abacus” – Edit: Had to change to the live version b/c EMI is clowning me from afar.

J Mascis – Several Shades of Why:  Largely acoustic release from lead singer of Dinosaur Jr., along with a long list of great collaborators such as Kurt Vile, Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), and Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses).

J Mascis – “It Is Done”

Noah and The Whale – Last Night on Earth:

Cornershop feat. Bubbley Kaur – Cornershop & The Double-O Groove Of:  This British-Indian-backgrounded artist released THE album of 1997, When I Was Born for the 7th Time, but largely dropped off the radar screen after that.  This is a nice release that harkens back to his roots. (If you can find it, listen to “Double Decker Eyelashes”, which is the star of the album.)

Cornershop – “Supercomputed”

Oh Land – S/T:  Danish electro-pop star with first stateside release.  Currently touring with 80s greats OMD.  Really sweet website, btw.

Oh Land – “Sun of a Gun (Savage Skulls Remix)”

The Boxer Rebellion – The Cold Still:  Aussie-Brit-Tennessee collective release 3rd full length.

The Boxer Rebellion – “Both Sides Are Even”

Caitlin Rose – Own Side Now:  For those who like She & Him, with a little more folksy-rural feel.

Caitlin Rose – “For the Rabbits”

Other notables:

The Death Set – Michel Poiccard (Try “Can You Seen Straight”.)

Dead Kenny Gs – Operation Long Leash (Just like the name of this punk-jazz band.  Try “Black Truman”.)

The Naked and Famous – Passive Me Aggressive You (Very New Zealandish, but reminds me of Passion Pit at times.)

Nouvelle Vague – Singers

Paper Tiger – Made Like Us

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Scandoulous
